Did you ever notice that when you see pictures of luxury hotels or fine homes they have pillows everywhere? Not just two rectangular pillows on the bed for sleeping but piles of pillows in all shapes and sizes. There’s a whole vocabulary for decorative pillows – toss pillows, breakfast pillows, boudoir pillows, neck pillows, roll pillows – the list goes on and on, and then there are the various pillow covers and shams designed to fit each style of pillow.

Spa Pillow

The basic rectangular pillow comes in a standard and a king size and these are the basic pillows you are probably most familiar with and the ones most people sleep on. Then there are square pillows are called Euro pillows and they require Euro shams, a special pillow cover that is generally decorative. Euro pillows and shams are not really for sleeping on – they serve as a backdrop for more pillows. Neck rolls are the oblong pillows that are twelve to eighteen inches long and although they can be decorative they are actually quite nice for support while reading or watching television. Toss pillows are pretty much just what they sound like – decorative pillows that you toss on a bed or a chair to add color and texture.

Boudoir and breakfast pillows can be in any number of shapes and sizes and these are just the sort of pillows you see piled on the bedspreads and comforters in all those fancy hotels and upscale homes. Think back to the Hollywood movie star pictures where the starlet lounges on an elegant bed or chaise – those are boudoir pillows.
